Croatia has sent England Packing

England have crashed out of the World Cup at the semi-final stage after losing 2-1 to Croatia in extra time in Moscow. The Three Lions took an early lead through right back Kieran Trippier’s free kick and had chances to double their advantage throughout the first half. But they were pegged back midway through the second half when Ivan Perisic flicked home a cross with an outstretched boot to make it 1-1. Croatia had the better of the latter stages and scored again in extra time when striker Mario Mandzukic lashed the ball into the net following some hesitation in England’s defence. England’s players sank to the ground (centre) and were in tears (inset) at the final whistle as the result sank in while Gareth Southgate looked forlorn (left) as he comforted his team. Thousands of fans had turned Moscow red and white for the game while millions more looked crestfallen at the final whistle (pictured top and bottom right) at outdoor events around England, including in London, Manchester and Leeds. Croatia will go on to face France in the final
